Bydgoszcz Canal, built between 1773-1774, is a unique monument of hydro thoughts. He joined the Vistula and the Oder rivers,through their tributaries - Noteć and Brda. Construction of the canal lasted only a year and a half. For this purpose, the main works brought about 8,000 settlers. In the late eighteenth / nineteenth century, the sluice was built of brick, which until today we can admire the old Bydgoszcz Canal. The importance of the Bydgoszcz Canal increased significantly in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the first steam-powered ships appears.
Before World War I began reconstruction of the channel.Launched in 1915 joined the new section of the Brda River - through the airlock, "Okole" and "Czyżkówko" - wirh the old canal.This investment, through the use of modern locks, allowed swimming through the canal the biggest barges.
Since the late nineteenth century, the old canal has become a popular meeting place of Bydgoszcz citizens and tourists.For visitors waited numerous restaurants, cafes and all attractions. The citisens who was spending their free time from work pleases military bands. After World War II the importance of the Bydgoszcz Canal as water artery was undeniable, but over time its transport capacity decreased.It is now part of an international waterway E-70, but due to outdated equipment is classified as class II waterway and waits for the revitalization that would allow him to regain former glory.In 2005, the channel has been listed for its architectural of Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship in 2014 - the Year of the Bydgoszcz Canal - launched efforts for recognition as a historic monument and a UNESCO heritage site.
